Yesterday was the most fashionable event of the year, the Met Gala. The who’s who of fashion (and celebrity) are all in attendance. This year’s event followed under the theme of Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. I think most people in attendance took this theme as ‘dress like a robot’ as many of the dresses looked space age and silver was the choice colour. What the theme was really about, was tradition vs innovation or classic vs modern. But the theme was interpreted more literally. More Jetson style. Boring. I don’t know, but as the pictures from the red carpet were coming in last night, one after the next I just felt uninspired and unimpressed. No Wows. Well one. That’s to come. But I guess maybe this fashion parade of all parades, has just gone over the top. Where fashion itself has gotten a little lost and it’s more for the show (for example, Solange’s yellow outfit). Fashion to me, has always been about looking good, having fun and wearing garments that just complement your body type and face. I didn’t see much of that last night.
But the one outfit (actually three) that stood out to me was that of Jenna Lyons who arrived with Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. All three were dressed identically in J.Crew tuxedoes. I don’t know why this spoke to me. It’s not like I never saw this look before, after all it was Yves St Laurent who introduced it to us, ‘Le Smoking’ way before I was born, but it just really stood out to me.
If you havent seen the looks from last night, here is Vogue’s recap from the red carpet.
