Going back to work as a mom is definitely a game changer to my old routine for going to work. I also have a new found respect for parents of more than one child. How do you do it?! It’s not like anything is new to me with having a baby, I mean Ethan is two short days from turning one! We are experienced at getting ourselves out the door! But man-oh-man, we were thrown a curve ball last week. Last Monday was my official first day back to work. I woke up with pink eye, I was pretty congested and as I would later find out, I also had an ear infection. Needless to say, I told everyone my costume was germs!
To add, Ethan and Terry were also pretty sick- we’re a whole lot of fun over here! And at the end of the week, we had Ethan’s first birthday party on Saturday. So we had few things on our plate and being sick was just an annoying obstacle. As a side note, we are happy to report that we are all doing better now.
My morning routine has changed and Terry and I are learning (emphasis on learning) as we go. For one thing, there is a lot more stuff to do. But definitely what is working for us is planning ahead. I choose my outfit the night before. My hair looks best when it’s washed in the morning (curly) so I haven’t been able to do that one ahead of time. Unless I straighten it. Which I plan on doing soon! I also choose Ethan’s outfit so that it’s easy for Terry when he gets him dressed.
We also plan a weekly menu so we’re not trying to come up with ideas at the last minute and worst- not have the ingredients on hand. I would like to start preparing stuff on Sunday so we have ready made meals during the week, but we’re not there yet.
We definitely don’t have everything mastered yet. I mean last week I messed up my German streak on Duolingo. Was almost at 200 days!! C’est la vie. I am taking a break right now from it to adjust to my new life. It was kind of a relief to put a hold on it for a bit. But I’ll start again soon. Anyways, that said, just like when I was on mat leave and trying to conquer my to do list and realized there was only so much I could get done in one day, I have learned to prioritize what I want to get done that day. I’m doing the same thing still. Everyday I choose what is most important (personal projects) for me to complete that day. It helps me feel accomplished and allows me to slowly move through my to do list.
And that is where I am at. Week two is off to a good start. We are all on the road to recovery. I’m settling into my new job very well. We are going to have a quiet celebration on Wednesday for Ethan’s first birthday and I have an unplanned three day weekend ahead. I would love to hear your tips for balancing everything and monday to friday home tips! I’m all ears! And Ethan’s birthday party was a great success, lots of fun! Full report soon.
