I thought I would share what I have recently learned, on baby naps, for those who might be going through the same thing. I’m sure this lesson also applies to younger babies. For the last few days, Ethan hasn’t been napping. He just screams when I put him down. I was becoming pretty frustrated and starting to think we were back to square one with his whole non-napping thing. The problem was, these last few days he fell asleep in the car in the morning (he only takes afternoon naps). Yesterday he only fell asleep in the car for like a minute (I swear) and then refused to nap. I walked around outside and he finally fell asleep. Phew. But that didn’t solve my ‘problem’. I needed to get these baby naps (in the crib) going again!
Earlier that afternoon I had stopped in at a ‘mom meet-up’ and one girl was talking about buying toys that ‘wore out her child’. Honestly, I had never thought about ‘wearing Ethan out’ at this age. I figured he just needed the sleep to grow. Point finale. Haha. I mean he’s always crawling around and playing. I just thought of it as more about development and exploration. But today, I was a little wiser. Ethan woke up at 7am to nurse and was ready for the day, he usually sleeps until 8:30. So I knew he would be tired. Our morning plan was to go meet a friend and their baby to go for a walk. Ethan fell asleep in the car, on the way there. Baby naps in the car are fine but they take away from the much needed afternoon one. I would say he was out 30 minutes at most. He was awake while we walked around her neighborhood. Later, when we got home, and after giving him his lunch, I immediately put him down to play. Let him crawl everywhere until he started showing ‘the signs’ of needing sleep. Around 2:15 he started to give me the signals and I nursed him. 25 minutes later he was ready for bed. WIN. Baby nap back on! Ethan normally nurses at 1:30 and goes down at 2. So by just putting it off a bit, you know, following his needs and not a clock, and by also letting him burn up his energy, he slept. I hope if you are going through the same struggles with napping for your baby, this helps! And please feel free to share your tips below. I would love to know more!
