Guys, this is my last week of maternity leave. Wow. I remember last year, when I started my last week of work before going on my maternity leave. I didn’t know what to expect. I remember thinking, I really hope I don’t get bored and was planning a lot of return trips to visit work! I’m in walking distance to my office…
But low and behold, my life changed for the better on November 9, 2015 and my little baby boy became the focus of my life (and Terry’s too!). My life and Terry’s life evolved around Ethan’s. After the initial “OMG, we have a baby” which by the way, it doesn’t go away, we started to get a bit of a routine going. Terry was back at work by December but luckily, my parents were back in town, so I had extra help and not to mention, somebody to talk to! We would go on afternoon walks everyday (we really lucked out with mild December temperatures) and everyday I could walk a little further (I was recovering from a c-section). Then it was Christmas and January soon settled in. And I was alone. My parents were back out west and Terry was at work. Not to mention, we had a few days of really cold, nasty weather. So I joined a mama and baby yoga group and also made some new friends. I was also very lucky that in my building I had a friend who was a new mom as well, and our babies were very close in age.
I also had several friends who were becoming moms or a mom for a second and third time around so I had a pretty good entourage (still do!). During my maternity leave I joined several mom & baby classes and mom Facebook groups . That was really nice because if you found yourself bored, a quick message on the group board resulted in a meet-up shortly after.
Maternity leave was great. I took full advantage. I’m also really proud of some of the stuff I got done. I took a professional writing course for business (and aced it) and also took up German (with Duolingo). It’s going really well. I’m closing in on a 180 day streak… would have had more but forgot one day to do my exercises and had also forgotten to buy the streak freeze and well c’est la vie. But that does not change how much I have learned!
But sure, maternity leave was not always a bowl full of cherries. There were some days when Ethan was just not a lot of fun and I had to focus on keeping my cool, also not always easy. But you get by and tomorrow is always another day. I also remember telling myself that when I’m back at work, I’ll miss spending my days with him and even the
bad more challenging days, would be missed.
So next week, my life is about to change again. I’m ready for this next adventure (and a little nervous too, about how I am going to maintain a balance and get everything done). Tips are very welcome here, please send! But Ethan is in a great daycare, they really care about him and he’s also getting to be in a more social situation. A plus for this kid who is super chatty. Can’t wait for our conversations ahead!
